Russian scientists have found new evidence suggesting that a giant galaxy cluster known as "Peanut" was born from a colossal cosmic collision between two groups of galaxies, in an event that is relatively recent by astronomical standards.
Researchers from the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences revealed that the results of a recent study support the hypothesis that the giant galaxy cluster known as "Peanut" formed as a result of a direct and high-speed collision between two groups of galaxies in the constellation Aries.
The institute explained that analyses indicate this cluster, which is a massive gathering of galaxies bound together by gravity, formed less than 100 million years ago, a very short period of time by the age of the universe, which spans billions of years.
The researchers noted that they observed this cluster for the first time two years ago while analyzing data and images captured by the "Spektr-RG" space observatory, which prompted them to expand their studies to uncover its nature, structure, and formation mechanism.
The study relied on a wide range of observational data, including X-ray images from the "Spektr-RG" and "Chandra" observatories, along with observations from the Russian Large Telescope BTA, the Turkish telescope RTT-150, the DESI instrument in the United States, and the ASKAP radio telescope.
The researchers confirmed that the results provided by these observatories and telescopes strengthened the evidence that the giant galaxy cluster formed as a result of the collision of two groups of galaxies, in a discovery that contributes to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms of large-scale cosmic structure evolution over time.
