South Korea is witnessing a notable rise this summer in the rates of heat-related illnesses and deaths, amid unprecedented heatwaves that have prompted health authorities to raise the alert level.
Government data shows that reported cases during late summer have nearly tripled over the past decade, with the annual average of cases rising from 215 between 2011 and 2015 to 658 during the period from 2016 to 2020, and then to 638 between 2021 and 2025; according to an analysis conducted by a government institute affiliated with the Ministry of Interior using data from the Korea Disease Control Agency.
Deaths related to heat exposure have also seen a significant increase, with the annual average rising from 3.3 cases between 2012 and 2015 to more than four cases over the past decade, while the year 2024 alone recorded 12 deaths due to heat stress. Authorities confirm that this increase comes in the context of accelerating climate changes that have made heatwaves longer and more intense, with the highest average temperatures recorded in August since modern monitoring began.
In a recent report, the Korean agency stated that hospitals recorded more than 120 new cases in the last week, mostly among the elderly and workers in exposed sites, prompting the government to expand the scope of (cooling centers) in major cities and provide free water points at public transport stations. It also announced an urgent plan to enhance monitoring of heat stress in schools and summer camps, after observing an increase in cases among younger age groups.
Weather forecasts indicate that high temperatures will continue until the end of August, with the possibility of increased humidity, which doubles the risks of heat stress and increases pressure on the health sector, amid ongoing warnings against direct sun exposure during peak hours.
